Description

The Great Stages of the Path to Enlightenment (Lam Rim Chenmo) is an amazing comprehensive text by Lama Je Tsongkapa that outlines in depth all the mental attitudes and practices necessary for one to progress towards Buddhahood.  It is considered a fundamental text in the Geluk tradition of Tibetan Buddhism which Namgyal Monastery part of.  Guy Newland was one of the principal translators of this text into English.  He was also editor of the publication of the three volumes of this text by Snow Lion which made this text widely available to Western students.  Guy also was co-host for teachings on the Lam Rim Chenmo by His Holiness the 14th Dalai in the summer of 2008.  Guy translated and edited these teachings and incorporated them into the book, From Here to Enlightenment. It is important to emphasize here the crucial role that translators have played throughout the history of the spread of Buddhism and the profound knowledge they gain on the topics of a text through the process of translation.  Thus, through his translation work Guy has a deep and comprehensive understanding of the Lam Rim as well as great skill in conveying their essential meaning to Western students.  During this talk, Guy will provide an overview of the Lam Rim Chenmo teachings and how to integrate these in daily life, as well as share his experience in translating this monumental text.
