Generosity and patience—the skillful means of benefitting other beings—are two of six perfections that are practiced on the Bodhisattva path to enlightenment.  They can be practiced at any stage of development and are continually enhanced and refined as we gain more familiarity with them and more capacity to practice them.  Generosity is the practice of giving what is needed to benefit others without attachment to what is given. The three primary forms of generosity are:

1) giving material necessities

2) giving freedom from fear and

3) giving the Dharma.

Patience is the practice of fortitude and remaining unperturbed in the face of difficult circumstances.  Again, there are three primary aspects of the practice of patience:

1) patience when confronted with harmful beings

2) patience through the voluntary acceptance of difficult circumstances and sufferings and

3) patience necessary for continued study and contemplation of Dharma teachings.

During this weekend intensive, Geshe-la will provide thorough explanations of the practice of generosity and patience along with various details related to their different aspects.  This is an excellent teaching for newer students to gain an understanding of these important Buddhist practices while more seasoned students will further deepen and enhance their practices.
