Description:

The Four Noble Truths were taught by Buddha Shakyamuni during his first turning of the wheel of Dharma at Deer Park.  This teaching is foundational to all forms of Buddhism throughout the world.

The Four Noble Truths are:

·        The truth of suffering,

·        The origin of suffering,

·        The cessation of suffering and

·        The path to the cessation of suffering.

In brief, the truth of suffering refers to our experience of afflictive emotions and the actions we take based on these afflictive emotions.  The cause of this suffering arises from our misconception of things as appearing to exist independently compared to how they exist in reality.   The cessation of suffering occurs when we overcome this misconception through the development of wisdom that understands and sees the reality of how things exist.  This wisdom is cultivated through various practices that comprise the path.  There are many aspects to understanding the Four Noble Truths in full, including the nature of each truth, how to engage with each truth and the result of each truth.  Also, each truth has four attributes which serve to counteract distorted conceptions about each truth. Finally, there are both coarse and subtle levels to each of the four truths.  A full understanding of all these aspects of this teaching supports a practitioner in their spiritual development.

During this weekend intensive, Geshe-la will provide an in-depth explanation of the Four Noble Truths, their various aspects and attributes and how they relate to each other as well as to our daily lives.  This weekend intensive is ideal for persons new to Buddhism as it will give a sound foundation for further study.  This teaching will also provide deeper understanding of these topics for those who have been studying Buddhism for some time.
