Description:

Karma and compassion are central to Buddhist teachings and practice.  Teachings on karma describe the connection between our actions and our experiences of happiness or suffering.  Specifically, positive actions of body, speech and mind bring about positive experiences, while negative actions of body, speech and mind result in suffering.  Compassion is the wish to free beings from their suffering.  Through the practice of compassion, we bear witness to the suffering in the world and cultivate the desire to alleviate the suffering.  At a deeper level, we see how ourselves and others can become caught in negative habits that endlessly create suffering.  Based on this compassion we take responsibility to reduce both our own and others’ suffering. Taking responsibility requires reducing negative/non-virtuous actions and increasing positive/virtuous ones as well as doing what we can to help alleviate the suffering of ourselves and others.  This is the heart of daily Buddhist practice.  During this weekend intensive, Geshe-la will discuss in depth teachings on karma, compassion and taking responsibility.  This is an excellent teaching for newcomers to develop an understanding of these foundational teachings.  More seasoned students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the relationship of karma, compassion and responsibility and how to integrate this into daily practice.   As always, Geshe-la will leave plenty of time for questions and discussion on these important topics.
